Mongla Port is the second
Sea Port of Bangladesh. It is situated on the southwestern part of the
country and is the eco-friendly port of the country.
Mongla Port is situated on
the East Bank of Pussur River near the confluence of Pussur river and Mongla
Nala at distance of (approx.) 65 nautical miles from the Fairway Buoy
situated at Lat. 21° 26.9´ N Long 89° 34.4´ E in the Bay of Bengal. The
geographical position of the Port Jetties is in position Lat. 22° 29.32´ N Long 89°
35.57´ E. The Port is well protected by the largest mangrove forest known as the
Sundarban.
Towards Establishing the Mongla Port
Chalna Port established on 1st December 1950 under Ministry of
Communication [Gazette Notification No.PD-4(48)/50/1 dated 29th September 1950.]
A British Merchant Ship "CITY OF LYONS" first entered the
Port and anchored at Joymonirgol on 11th December 1950.
On 20th June 1954 the anchorage was shifted to Mongla between
Mongla Nulla and Pussur River about 16 km upstream (north) from the previous site
Joymonirgol.
Later on M/S. Frederick R. Harris, a consulting firm of USA after
study the economic and engineering feasibility they submitted a report in 1964 with
recommendations for establishing permanent port facility on East bank of Pussur River at
Mongla. Subsequently, other national and international experts carried out further
feasibility studies. Accordingly, a project entitled "Permanent Port on Pussur
River" was undertaken. Under this project 5 Jetties were constructed with necessary
back up facilities
Chalna Port continued to function as a Government Directorate till
May 1977. The Port Directorate was then converted to an Autonomous
Organization named "Chalna Port Authority" under the Ministry of Communications (vide
Ordinance No.L III of 1976). Subsequently, an amendment of the above ordinance was made on
24th March 1982 (Vide ordinance No.L IV dated 24th March 1982) remaining
Chalna Port Authority as Port of Chalna Authority. Again, through the Bangladesh
Extra-ordinance Gazette Notification dated 8th March 1987, Port of Chalna was
substituted by "Mongla Port" and as a result the ort Authority came to be known
as Mongla Port Authority.
Port Management
The Port is under the
administrative control of the Ministry of Shipping, Government of the Peoples Republic of
Bangladesh. Chairman is the Chief Executive of the Port Authority. There is a Board
consisting of the Chairman and three Members (Operation, Finance and
Engineering & Development.) The Board formulates the policy of
Operation, Administration, Finance and Development of the Port.
Function
Mongla Port is basically a
service oriented as well as income generating organization. The Port provides facilities
and services to the international shipping lines and other concerned agencies providing
shore based facilities like Jetties, Sheds, Cargo Handling Equipment and maintaining
adequate water depth in the channel as well as making provision for safe day and night
shipping.
ISPS

International
and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code implemented at Mongla Port Facility with
effect from 24 June 2004 and Compliance Certificate has been obtained from the
Designated Authority accordingly. Presently Security Level-1 is in force at
Mongla Port.
Navigation Information
Maximum Length : Maximum length of vessel that can enter
in the anchorage is 225 M and for the Mooring Buoys it is 185 M. Efforts are made to
increase this permissible length to 225 M.
Maximum Draught : Vessel of 9.0 M, 8.0 M and 7.0 M maximum
draught can take berth in the anchorage, Mooring Buoys and Jetties respectively.
Tidal Range : The tides are
important for navigation as they determine the possibility of crossing the shallow area
within the port limit. The tides are semi diurnal. The approximate tidal range in between
1.2 M and 3.5 Metre.
Pilotage : Pilotage is compulsory.
The pilotage ground extends from the Fairway Buoy,
approximately at position Lat. 21°
26´ N Long 89° 34´ E to the northern limit of the port but master of
the vessel navigates himself upto the pilot boarding ground at the Hiron
Piont and then the Port Pilot guides the master rest of the passage up
to Mongla.
Anchorage : The anchorage is safe
and holding ground is good. The bed of the river is soft mud.
Night Navigation : Night Navigation
is continuing for outward and inward movement of vessels upto 145 Metre
LOA and 6.5 Metre draught.
Radio Communication
: Port control, Harbour control and Hiron Point Pilot Station maintains
VHF Channel 16 and 12 for 24 hrs. Installation of GMDSS equipment in
Hiron Point Pilot Station and New Port Control Station are in the

to Reefer Containers, there are two Generating sets of 400 KVA each at within
the Jetty area.
Fresh Sweet
